Sports Massage Chorley

Hands-on soft tissue therapy at our Clifford Street clinic, for athletes, active people and anyone carrying tension.

Sports massage in the heart of Chorley

Sports massage in Chorley is available at NV Physiotherapy as a standalone treatment or alongside a course of physiotherapy. Whether you are training for an event, recovering from a hard week at the gym or simply carrying tension from long days at a desk, our therapists use hands-on soft tissue techniques to ease tight muscles, restore movement and help you feel ready for whatever comes next. Sessions take place at our modern ground floor clinic on Clifford Street, right in the centre of Chorley, and you can book online or contact the team to arrange a time that suits you.

What is sports massage?

Sports massage is a specialist form of soft tissue therapy. It involves deep, targeted manipulation of the muscles, tendons and connective tissue, using techniques such as deep tissue work, trigger point release, muscle stripping and assisted stretching. The aim is to reduce tension, improve circulation and restore the normal length and function of the tissues that carry you through your day.

Despite the name, you do not need to be an athlete to benefit. The demands of a physically active job, long periods sitting at a computer, driving, or looking after young children can all leave muscles just as tight as a Sunday morning run. The team here at NV Physio treat people from every walk of life, and a good sports massage is one of the most effective ways to keep your body working comfortably.

TECHNIQUES WE USE

N

Deep tissue work

Firm, slow pressure into the deeper layers of muscle to release long-held tightness.

N

Trigger point release

Targeted pressure on the small, tender knots that refer pain into surrounding areas.

N

Muscle stripping

Long strokes along the length of the muscle to restore its normal length and glide.

N

Assisted stretching

Guided stretches that take the tissue through its full range once it has been warmed and released.

Who we treat

Our sports massage therapists see a wide mix of patients at the Chorley clinic. Some of the most common reasons people book include:

Runners and cyclists

Runners and cyclists managing tight calves, hamstrings, glutes and hip flexors during heavy training blocks.

Gym members and strength athletes

Team sport players

If you are already seeing us for a sports injury, a tendon problem or ongoing back pain, sports massage can be built into your treatment plan to support the rehabilitation work you are already doing.

The benefits of sports massage

Regular sports massage does far more than feel good for an hour. Used consistently, it can help you to:

Many of our patients use sports massage both before and after physical activity. A pre-event massage prepares the muscles for work, while a post-event session helps flush out the stiffness and soreness that follows. What to expect at your appointment

01

Before your massage

Your first sports massage in Chorley begins with a short conversation. Your therapist will ask about your activity levels, any injuries past or present, and the areas that are troubling you most. This allows us to target the cause of your discomfort rather than simply working on the symptoms, which is the approach we take across everything we do at NV Physio.

02

During the treatment

The treatment itself is carried out on a comfortable treatment couch in one of our private rooms. Pressure is firm but always within your tolerance, and your therapist will check in with you throughout the session and adjust the depth to suit you. You may feel some tenderness in areas that are particularly tight, but the aim is relief, not discomfort for its own sake.

03

Choosing your session length

We offer sports massage in 30 and 45 minute appointments. A 30 minute session is ideal for focusing on one or two specific areas, such as the calves or the upper back and neck. A 45 minute session gives your therapist time to work through the whole body or to treat several areas of tension properly. Wear loose, comfortable clothing, and if you are having your legs treated, shorts are ideal.

04

After your massage

After your massage you may feel a little tired or tender for a day or so, especially after deep work. Drinking plenty of water and keeping gently active helps. We have written more about this in our guide to how long you should rest after a sports massage.

Why choose NV Physiotherapy for sports massage in Chorley?

NV Physiotherapy is an independent clinic owned and run by chartered physiotherapist Nathan Varley. Our sports massage is delivered by trained therapists working alongside a physiotherapy team, which means that if your massage uncovers something that needs a closer look, such as a recurring niggle or a tendon that is not settling, expert advice is available in the same building.

Patients tell us they value the time we take to listen and the personalised approach we bring to every appointment. Our Chorley clinic is purpose designed, on the ground floor and easy to reach, with a calm waiting area and two private treatment rooms. We offer appointments six days a week, including early mornings, evenings and weekend slots, so fitting a massage around work, training and family life is straightforward.

Because we are based in the heart of Chorley, we regularly welcome patients from Euxton, Coppull, Adlington, Whittle-le-Woods and Leyland, as well as people travelling from Bolton, Horwich and Wigan for regular sports massage.

Sports massage as part of your physiotherapy

Sports massage and physiotherapy work well together. Massage prepares the tissues, physiotherapy addresses the underlying strength, movement or loading issue, and the combination often gets you back to what you love doing faster than either approach on its own. If you are recovering from an injury, ask your physiotherapist whether a sports massage would support your programme. Equally, if you come in for a massage and your therapist notices something that needs assessing, they will let you know and can arrange a physiotherapy appointment for you.

Frequently asked questions about sports massage in Chorley

What is sports massage?

Sports massage is a specialist form of soft tissue therapy involving deep manipulation of the muscles, tendons, and connective tissue. Despite the name, it is suitable for everyone, not just athletes. It benefits anyone with muscle tension from a demanding job, prolonged desk work, poor posture, or regular physical activity.

Is sports massage painful?

Sports massage involves firm pressure and can feel uncomfortable in areas with significant muscle tension. Your therapist will always work within your tolerance and adjust the pressure based on your feedback throughout the session.

How long does a sports massage session last?

Sessions are available in 30 or 45 minutes. We recommend 45 minutes for a full-body treatment or to address multiple areas of tension.

How often should I have a sports massage in Chorley?

This depends on your activity level and goals. Athletes in heavy training may benefit from weekly sessions. For general muscle maintenance and tension relief, once or twice a month is typical for most people.

Is sports massage covered by health insurance?

Some private health insurance policies cover sports massage, particularly when it forms part of a physiotherapy treatment plan. We recommend checking with your insurer before booking.
